philosophy and mission

The Garden is a Progressive Preschool which utilizes a blend of philosophies and methodologies to educate its students. Our philosophy is highly influenced by the research of Dr. Maria Montessori, Jean Piaget, John Dewey, Lev Vygotsky and Loris Malaguzzi, among others. Fundamental to progressive ideas is a deep respect  for a child’s ability to learn through experience.

Our developmentally appropriate approach to learning is designed to fit each child instead of making each child fit into a preset program. Our preschool classrooms are mixed ages, welcoming children between the ages of 2.5 – 6 years, where children who are at various stages of development can learn from and with each other. Learning takes place in a non-competitive, collaborative atmosphere where each child can develop at his/her own pace. Young children learn best through active, hands-on experiences. The classroom environment is carefully designed to meet the needs of its unique students and contains a wide variety of materials that  foster cognitive and socio-emotional learning. The purpose of the materials is not just to impart knowledge to  children, but rather to provide them with stimuli that capture their attention and develop skills that will serve them in all facets of life.

Mission Statement

Our school mission is to provide a fun and nurturing environment that allows students the opportunity to explore and discover their own unique and creative talents and to generate a community of learners that has a deep love and respect for others, for their environment and for themselves.
